| Stewart & Jasper treefruit orchards become a busy place in late May. It is the beginning of the stonefruit season and it will continue until the first part of September. Our harvest begins each morning at sunrise and continues only during the coolest hours of the day to insure quality fruit. In the harvesting process the fruit is gently picked from the tree and placed into small plastic picking totes. The totes are filled about 3/4 full to prevent any unwanted damage to the fruit.
Once the totes are full they are placed into a wooden bin which holds 24 totes. A tractor will pull a bin trailer that holds four bins. The bins are then covered with a mesh tarp and await transportation to the packing facility. The tarp protects them from direct sunlight, which increases core temperature and sunburn. The bins are then transported in a refrigerated van to the packing facility. |
